A simple guide to Memorial Jewellery, by Phoenix by Vaughtons.
Put simply, memorial jewellery describes the incorporation of cremation ashes or hair into rings, pendants, charms or any other piece of jewellery.
It’s a wonderful way for people to keep their loved ones close and to remember them in a tasteful and thoughtful way.
We speak to lots of customers who’ve taken loved ones’ ashes away from a funeral and felt completely lost as to what they should do with them. With families being increasingly mobile in the modern world, people are often reluctant to scatter ashes as they would have in years gone by.
Some of our customers are family members who live in different countries and can’t decide on a place to scatter ashes that would be easily accessible to everybody. Others are reluctant to scatter them at home - perhaps in the garden - in case they decide to move house and risk having no access to the special place where the ashes are left.
Many just want to keep the ashes with them at all times for the feeling of comfort and closeness it provides, but realise it’s not practical to carry even a miniature urn wherever they go.
Memorial Jewellery is for all members of the family, including your beloved pets. From horses to dogs and cats, we understand that pets are a treasured part of your family and many people want to commemorate them with memorial jewellery.
Our pieces only require a very small amount of ashes - roughly 150 milligrams - so creatures large and small can be memorialised.
There are many different techniques (and we’ve tried nearly all of them), but most companies will use either coloured resin or vitreous enamel, which is hot glass. We exclusively use vitreous enamel, for reasons we discuss here. The glass is poured in layers into a cavity in the jewellery, allowing for each layer to cool before another is added.
The ashes can be added at any point, although there’s nothing random about the layering process at Phoenix by Vaughtons. We tested the process over and over again, laying the ashes at different depths within the enamel. If the ashes are too deep, they begin to disappear behind the coloured glass. Too close to the surface, they look as though they have been sprinkled on as an afterthought. We layer them at just the right level, allowing them to sparkle like stars in the night sky.
Some companies offer extras, such as diamond dust mixed with the ashes, but we found that using our layering technique and by preparing the ashes by hand before insertion, they sparkle beautifully on their own, without any need for extra materials to be added.
